Additional Dormitory Units (ADUs)
Additional dormitory units (ADUs) are small buildings that work for virtually anything you can think of. Coachella Valley Development designs and builds additional dormitory units for our customers as garages and sheds, guest houses and even to create a small rental or vacation property on the property. ADUs also help create more affordable housing for renters or travelers. If you own a single-family home, you may be able to build an ADU on your property.

ADU Possibilities
Virtually limitless possibilities exist when designing and building an ADU. Although the square footage typically remains small—from a few hundred square feet to just over 1,000 square feet—these buildings have a lot to offer. You can use an ADU for:
- A home office
- An art studio
- Living quarters for a family member
- A rental unit
- A vacation rental
- A yoga or exercise studio
Concerned about an ADU feeling like, well, a converted garage? We can help you design your outbuilding with tall ceilings, strategically placed windows and skylights, and an intuitive layout that makes guests, renters or your own office or studio feel large yet homey.
Considerations When Designing an ADU
Typically, requirements for detached ADUs allow the unit to be no larger than 1,200 square feet. For attached ADUs — meaning the structure remains attached to your home — it can’t be more than 1,200 square feet or more than 50% of the size of your home. You may be able to have more than one ADU. They typically can be more than one story tall.
Coachella Valley Development has been a part of the Coachella Valley community for more than 50 years. We know the building codes and regulations surrounding ADUs inside and out, and we will help to ensure your unit is legal.
