Additional dormitory units (ADUs) are small buildings that work for virtually anything you can think of. Virtually limitless possibilities exist when designing and building an ADU. Although the square footage typically remains small—from a few hundred square feet to just over 1,000 square feet—these buildings have a lot to offer. You can use an ADU for:

Considerations When Designing an ADU
Typically, requirements for detached ADUs allow the unit to be no larger than 1,200 square feet. For attached ADUs — meaning the structure remains attached to your home — it can’t be more than 1,200 square feet or more than 50% of the size of your home. You may be able to have more than one ADU. They typically can be more than one story tall.
